Black bamboo is one of the most popular ornamental varieties in China and Japan, but it is also one of the oldest varieties grown in the United States, having first been introduced here in 1827. It is admired for it height (up to 30') and its strength (2" in diameter), and because its bright green leaves contrast sharply with the deep black shoots.
